The intermittent operation process of permeable bricks for ladles includes steel connection, gas blowing refining, steel pouring, slag pouring and oxygen cleaning. The above process is repeated during the use of permeable bricks until the end of their service life. Among many factors that affect the service life of the breathable brick, thermal peeling and oxygen cleaning are the important reasons leading to the damage of the breathable brick. The blowing mixing time and mixing strength also have a very significant impact on the damage of the breathable brick. The main reasons for the return of molten steel and the frequent replacement of porous bricks are that the porous bricks are peeled off, the steel is clamped in the slit and cannot be blown open.

In field use, it is often found that the lower part of the heating surface where the slit corundum spinel breathable brick contacts with the molten steel is prone to produce transverse cracks, leading to thermal peeling from the transverse cracks, which greatly reduces the service life of the breathable brick. The erosion and penetration of molten steel and slag are one of the important reasons for the damage of the breathable brick. The erosion and penetration of molten steel and slag form a reaction metamorphic layer on the working face of the breathable core, which leads to the structural peeling, In case of serious penetration, the air passage will be blocked, and the blowing rate and service life will be reduced.

The analysis of the microstructure of the residual bricks of the used vent bricks shows that the slit and crack of the vent bricks for LF refining process have obvious slag erosion and penetration, and the slit and crack of the vent bricks for LF+VD refining process have molten steel penetration. In the process of periodic operation, the expansion of the slit mouth and cracks caused by thermal shock will aggravate the penetration erosion of molten steel or slag, and lead to the occurrence of peeling phenomenon. After the slot of the breathable brick is blocked, it must be cleaned by blowing oxygen, which directly affects the blowing rate and service life of the breathable brick.
